Overview
Pulse publishes reported essays that take twenty minutes to read — on a web that measures attention in seconds. The old site fought its own content: popovers, autoplay, infinite sidebars. Readers arrived curious and left tired.
We stripped the experience to typography, pacing and trust. The article page became the whole product; everything else exists to get out of its way.
Approach
We read with the readers: five observed sessions, eye-tracking on three templates, and a ruthless inventory of every module competing with the text. Then we set the measure, the rhythm and the rules.
- A three-size type scale tuned for 20-minute sessions, with a true dark mode.
- Progress, footnotes and pull-quotes that never interrupt the line.
- Save-for-later and offline reading synced across web and apps.
- An editor-side style guide so new stories inherit the calm automatically.
- Performance budget: article pages interactive in under two seconds on 4G.
